He was awarded the second highest honor conferred by the U.S. Army for superior performance and outstanding dedication to duty during operations against the enemy from April 30, 1945 to June 30, 1945. After the war, he married Elizabeth Cullwell Johnson and was a devoted husband until her death in 2016. He practiced orthodontics for over forty years with offices in Highland Park and Oak Cliff. Additionally, he taught at Baylor Dental School. He was beloved by his patients for telling corny jokes and singing in the office and was famous in the neighborhood for giving out toothbrushes on Halloween. He loved to play golf, engage in any political discussion, recite poetry from memory, sing, and share tales from his childhood. Up until his very last days, he was always up for having a “little restorative” with whomever might be in the house. Please make any memorials to the charity of your choice.

Dallas M. Roark, R-CA Past President – 1980. Dallas was born on December 15, 1931, in Birchwood, TN, to Mattie White (1890-1952) and Franklin A. Roark (1886-1974). Dallas was the youngest of six living children, and his grandparents were Virginia Ann Conner (1852-1934) and William Marion Roark (1845-1923). Dallas’ paternal great grandparents were Juda Ann Carr (1813-1883) and Joseph Roark (1813-1876), and his maternal great grandparents were Martha Palmer (1815-1890) and Maximillian Haney Conner (1806-1893).

The family lived at the Franklin Asberry homeplace on the Tennessee River off of Eldridge Road, about 6 miles from downtown Birchwood. In the early 1930’s, when Dallas was about 2-3 years old, the farm was bought by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), and much of the land was flooded when the Chickmauga Dam was built downstream. After the farm was sold, the family moved to Cleveland, TN. In about 1937, Dallas’ father bought a farm, and the family moved to west Tennessee.

In 1942, the family moved from the farm to Chicago where Dallas graduated from high school. After graduating from the Northern Baptist Seminary in 1954, Dallas worked as an assistant pastor at Fairfield, Iowa. During this time he met Elaine. They began a dating period of about 5 years. On March 19, 1955, Dallas and Elaine were married in Cook, IL. After getting married, Dallas became the full-time pastor of a church in Bonaparte, Iowa. He left early, attended classes, came home, did pastoral ministries, and studied. In 1958, Dallas received his MA, and in 1963, he received a PhD.

In August 1959, Dallas actively participated in the first Roark-Conner Family Reunion held in Birchwood, TN. According to Laura’s book, “Laura Roark Shropshire — Her Life and Works,” “Laura had encouraged such a reunion for some time. . . . Most likely her brother, Berry, had taken the lead in fostering the reunion although the specific planning was in the hands of Dallas Roark — son of Berry — and Reba Shropshire Wilson.

In her letter to Alva, Laura expressed her hope that a large group would participate in the reunion, specifically mentioning the Conner and Witt families. . . .” The story continues with reunion details including, “Sunday morning the group gathered at Reba’s home on Clark Road and then drove in a convoy to the Salem Baptist Church site where Rev. Dallas Roark delivered a sermon on “Christ and the Samaritan woman.”

Along with Reba Shropshire Wilson, Dallas wrote and sent the first letter out to the families inviting them to the reunion. Through the years, Dallas and his family had been attending family reunions regularly, and in 1980, Dallas agreed to serve as the President of the R-CA. In addition, Dallas served as the R-CA News Reporter, for the Franklin Asberry Roark Family, from March 1995 to June 2004.

Dallas and Elaine had two children, Dalaine (Tim) Wood and Lyman and two grandchildren, Zach Wood and Megan Nixon. Agnes Pearl Kelley Roark

Agnes Kelley Roark, a beautiful woman, devout Christian with missionary zeal for working with young children, and for laboring with those in need of hope and guidance, left this earth early Easter morning to join her Savior on the day  celebrating  his Resurrection. Born  in Wichita, Kansas, February 6, 1924, to Fred Edward Kelley and Clara Augusta Butler, and into what would become a large family of eleven children: Agnes in the middle of  four boys and seven girls. At a very young age, her parents moved to Atlantic, Iowa, where “Aggie” attended all grades of the public schools. While she was still in school, her father died suddenly at an early age, leaving her mother with a large family to raise and support. While still in school and later, Aggie worked from the home to pay her portion of household support.

Aggie became a Christian while a member of the First Baptist Church in Atlantic and taught  Sunday School for children from the time she was twelve. With a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she began home missionary work under the Women’s American Baptist Home Mission Society at the H.C. Gleiss Memorial Center for disadvantaged minority children in downtown Detroit. After the boys were in school, Aggie completed work for a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at Midwestern University and then, responding to the focus on the kindergarten level in Texas, she completed work on a Master’s Degree in Kindergarten Education from Texas Woman’s University. John L. Scott
Aug 9, 1932 – July 16, 2022

According to his birth certificate, John L. Scott was born in the sticks of Birchwood, on Aug. 9, 1932, the second son of Frank and Cora Scott.

Or else he was born the day before that — at least if the declared testimony of his older brother, Howard, was to be believed. John was only too happy to celebrate both of his birthdays. At the same time, he used the official birth date for all legal purposes, since it is suspected that Howard, who was only 5 years old when John was born, might not have had all the facts. Then again, at this point, no one can be sure …

There were (at least) three things that John was known for: repairing appliances, playing the guitar and doting on the light of his life, his dear wife, Betty.

John was in business as a noted appliance repairman since January 1967. He was known as “Honest John,” and if he couldn’t fix it, well, then it couldn’t be fixed at all!

John was also recognized as a skillful guitar player, and he shared his musical ability with churches all over the area. He especially loved playing the Red Back hymns. When John joined in the music, it went to a higher level. He used to smile and say, “When I play, I put the boogie in it!”

In February of this year, John lost his beloved Betty. Married on Christmas Day, 1955, they had been married going on 67 years. It was just about impossible to think of one of them without thinking of the other.

While John would never be mistaken for a theologian, there was no doubt at all that he was a sincere Christian. He had absolutely no doubt that Jesus would save, heal, deliver, restore and perform miracles. John did not fear death in the least, for he could join with the Apostle Paul in saying “… I know Whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” — 2 Timothy 1:12.

It is only fitting that he should so soon follow his Betty to the next life, for they would not have wanted to be apart for long. And so it was that, in God’s good time, John went from the grinding poverty of his childhood to someone rich in good works, rich in faith, and rich in the blessings of the Lord.

Farewell, dearest John. We look forward to seeing you again.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Cora Scott; brothers, Howard Scott, Pete Scott and Jack Dailey; sister-in-law, Clara Belle Scott; niece, Karen Scott; and nephew, Kaleb Keefer.

Left behind to cherish his memory, are his remaining brother, Eddie (Dianna); sister, Mary Dailey; sister-in-law, Kathy Scott; and a number of nephews, nieces, grandnephews/nieces, and great-grandnephews/nieces.

Paul Cleburne Conner

September 16, 1929 – July 28, 2022

Paul Cleburne Conner, aged 92, a true 20th century renaissance man, departed this world on July 28, 2022. He was a man of many talents, but his family was always first in his heart. He was born September 16, 1929, in Guntersville, Alabama, to Thelma Pendleton Conner and Frank Norwood Conner. He married his sweetheart, Dixie Faye Green on July 24, 1948.

After marrying, Paul and Dixie moved to Detroit, where he worked in automotive manufacturing. He joined the Air Force in 1952 and served until 1954. They returned to Alabama and he attended Alabama Polytechnic Institute, where Paul received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1957, and later a Master of Science in Industrial Arts in 1964. He worked at Ampex Corporation in Opelika and also taught drafting in the School of Industrial Arts during those years. Paul was a sportsman and an avid, self-taught golfer. He took over as superintendent of Saugahatchee Country Club, now Indian Pines, in the early 1970s and designed and built the current Saugahatchee Country Club course at the border of Opelika and Auburn. Naturally, his incredible knowledge of turfgrass led him to the Auburn University Athletic Department in 1982 as Assistant to Athletic Director/Facilities, where he and Coach Pat Dye teamed up to redesign the field at Jordan Hare Stadium. He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Auburn Athletic Department in 1986, the Unsung Hero Award from the Chilton County Auburn Club in 1992, and the George P. Toma Award for the best natural turf playing field in the nation. In 1992 he retired from AU and returned to golf course maintenance full time. In 2005, the Alabama Turfgrass Association honored him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Paul is preceded in death by his parents and his niece Melanie Hiett Bennett.

Fittingly, his last day at home was his 74th wedding anniversary, which he spent with his wife, Dixie. He leaves behind a large and loving family to whom he was an inspiration, a teacher, and a visionary. He is survived by his wife, Dixie; his four daughters, Elizabeth Conner Marchi (Jon), Nancy Conner Teel (Les), Susan Virginia Conner, and Malinda Conner Poe (Michael). The family would like to thank the many caregivers who lovingly gave dedicated care over the last several years, especially Carla McGastor, Karen Phanthachith, Anna Story, Margie Wright, Amanda Hamby, and others. Also, thanks to the staff at East Alabama Medical Center for their compassionate care.

A private interment will be held Sunday, August 7, with a memorial service on Monday, August 8, at 11:00am at Auburn United Methodist Church followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be given to the scholarship created in his name, the Paul C. Conner Turfgrass Endowed Scholarship at Auburn University. You can give online at Auburn Giving and search the scholarship by name or send a check payable to “Auburn University Foundation” with the name of the scholarship on the memo line to Annual Fund, Attn: Gift Processing, 317 S. Life here on earth is but a blink of an eye compared to eternity, and we must all decide where we are going to spend it. It’s my hope that you might receive the free (but not cheap) gift Jesus offers and that you choose to spend eternity with Him.

Knowing this:

There is no one righteous, not even one. Romans 3:10

All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23

If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED. Romans 10:9

Simple but life changing. Like Jeff, we pray that you decide on a personal relationship with Jesus.”

Doris Ann Henderson Glover

Doris Ann Glover, beloved wife, sister, and aunt, leaves behind a great legacy and will be immensely missed by all who had the honor of knowing her. She was born on historical D-Day, making that date known as Doris Ann Day for her family. While attending Memphis State University, she became an aunt for the first time, a title she proudly treasured until her death on April 15, 2024. Born on June 6, 1944, in Memphis, TN, to the late Jack Lock and Doris
Pankey Henderson, Doris earned a Bachelor of Science
degree from Memphis State University. After graduating
college, she embarked on a noble journey as a teacher, a role
she embraced with unwavering dedication. To her peers, she
was known simply as ‘Doris’, but to her southern family, she
was always and forever Doris Ann. She married Jere, the love of her life, on March 30, 1968. For 35 years, she taught elementary school in Montgomery County, pouring her heart and soul into improving the lives of each of her students, a commitment that continued until her retirement in 2003. Doris Ann delighted in each and every one of her nieces as they grew up. When they began having children, and the number of her great-nieces and nephews kept multiplying, so did her love for them. Even her great-great nieces and nephews all came to know and love their Aunt Doris Ann. She would frequently make time to travel to meet the newest additions and would absolutely cherish the time she spent holding them. From infants to the elderly, it didn’t matter how old you were. Whenever you were in the presence of Doris Ann, the world seemed to stop, and her undivided attention would be upon you. She would smile, lean in, and nod as she listened to you. That radiant smile of hers would brighten up every room she entered. No matter the setting, she made everyone feel welcome, important, and heard. Doris Ann’s family was not just a part of her life, but one of her most cherished possessions. Her home was always open, a welcoming space for her loved ones, where she hosted family gatherings both small and large. Her love for each of them was boundless, and she encouraged them all to reach their fullest potential, a testament to her unwavering support and belief in them. Doris Ann was incredibly selfless and generous. Even though her nieces and nephews were spread across the globe at times, she never forgot a birthday or a Christmas present. She could always pick out the prettiest dresses for her nieces, the snazziest outfits for her nephews, and the coolest, age-appropriate toys for all. Doris was a longtime member of Severna Park United Methodist Church. Her faith was not just a part of her life, but the cornerstone that guided her every action and deed, a direct result of her personal relationship with Jesus. In this, we find solace, knowing that she is now at peace with her Savior. Doris Ann’s legacy lives on in everyone she loved. She was an absolute treasure and will be dearly missed. Doris was the beloved wife of 56 years of Jere W. Glover; sister of Judith Lee Stevens; aunt of Valerie Stevens McLeod, Sidney Stevens (Ronnie) Petty, Juleanna (Christopher Reiter) Glover, Kristen Glover, Elizabeth (Patrick Sullivan) Glover and Rebecca (Darrell Issa) Glover; great-aunt of Jessica McLeod (Brian James) Patton, Rachel Margaret McLeod, Cale (Bridget McHoul) Petty, William and Blythe Weiss, Helena Walsh, Leopold Reiter, Shelby Glover and Avery Glover Sullivan and great-great-aunt of Ayelet, Oliver and Zayne Patton, Daniel Rounds, Derrick, Levi, Addy and Piper Petty. In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Frank Warren Stevens, and her nephew, Jesse Holt McLeod. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (serc.si.edu).

Sherrie Lynn Myers

Moon

Sherrie Lynn Myers Moon, of Madison, Alabama, earned her wings on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, after a long battle with a rare autoimmune disorder that she was simply too stubborn to give in to. She was born on June 18, 1960, in Huntsville, Alabama.

“Sherrie,” “Mom,” “Sissy,” and “Nana” — whatever one may have called her — she was appreciated and loved by all.

She is survived by her husband of 46 years, William Marion Moon, Jr (son of William Marion Moon, Sr, an R-CA Past President, and grandson of Benjami Freeman Moon and Lilly Victoria Roark); her daughter, Amanda Lynn (Larry) Marsili; her son, William Marion Moon, III (Melissa); three siblings:

Floyd “Junior” Myers; Bobby Myers; and Readis Boyette Swanson; her beloved grandchildren: Desmond Justice Marsili and Miracle Grace Moon; her dogs: Diamond and Scooter; and countless friends and extended family members.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Hilton Myers and Eula Faye Dalton Myers; and an older brother, Billy Lloyd Myers. Perhaps the greatest silver lining to her passing is the comfort in knowing that she is finally getting the opportunity to meet, get to know, and spoil her two grandchildren who preceded her in death: Landon Marion and Shyann Elaine Moon.

Sherrie loved thrift store shopping; screaming at the TV, hoping for a wreck while watching NASCAR on Sundays; rooting for Auburn (or anyone else playing ‘Bama); as well as watching non-stop game shows and Police TV (much to the aggravation of those who visited or shared a home with her). She collected small reminders of keeping life light and enjoyable, such as anything smiley face; Snoopy; and even school bus items that commemorated her nearly 20 years of service with the Madison City School System as a bus assistant to special needs children in the community, who she loved and considered “her kids” as an extension of her family.

While Sherrie might have been a bit embarrassed by it all, family and friends alike gathered for a Celebration of Life on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from 3:00 until 5:00 PM, at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville, Alabama. She was very clear that there would be no formal funeral service, so the Celebration of Life was a casual ”come as you are” event, where smiles and remembrance were enjoyed by those who attended, and per Sherrie, tears of sadness were to be checked at the door.

She didn’t want sadness to dampen the mood of the Celebration, which she certainly attended in spirit.
