This short biography of Luther Roark begins with his birth on December 31, 1879 in Birchwood, TN, in the homestead of his grandfather, Joseph Roark. Present were, of course, his mother and father, but also Grandmother Roark, now a widow who still lived in the homestead, and probably Grandmother Conner who lived not far away and who would be needed not only to assist in the birth but also to help care for Luther’s sister, Laura, then thirteen months old. The homestead, which was constructed of planed logs chinked with cemented clay in typical frontier style, consisted, at Luther’s birth, of one of the original two rooms plus an added room toward the creek as a replacement of the other original room.
